Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a union?

"A labor union is a group of two or more employees who join together to advance common interests" (U.S. Department of Labor). A union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate many different aspects of their work environment such as wages, health insurance, flexible scheduling, and more.

Who are Weigel Workers Union?

Weigel Workers Union is a collection of 122 Weigel employees in a select number of departments who have worked together to gain representation under the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians, a branch of the Communication Workers Association (NABET-CWA).

How do dues work?

Dues are 1.67% of your salary and are deducted automatically from your paycheck by NABET-CWA.

Is the union collecting dues from me right now?

No. Dues are not collected until an initial contract has been agreed upon by both the bargaining committee and your employer. The contract must then be ratified by all union members with a majority vote.

Does the union have initiation fees?

Yes—but as long as you sign a membership card before the ratification of the first contract, you won’t pay them! NABET-CWA has an estimated initiation fee of around $1,500 for new members, but since we are a newly-established unit, this fee is waived.

What are Weingarten Rights?

Any time you are asked to attend a meeting with a superior, you are allowed to inquire what the meeting is about. If it is disciplinary in nature, you can invoke your Weingarten Rights and ask to have a union representative present. Your representative can object to intimidation tactics or confusing questions on your behalf. You can also make this request even if a meeting has already started.
